Since my last full-time technical support manager's job, I have spent time as a full-time caretaker for children in my life, attended school (this is on-going to finish a BA and I hope, to go on to graduate school), provided practical support services (shopping, cooking, transport to appointments) for friends and family who are disabled or ill, and worked part-time as a computer consultant. While going to school, I need to have work that is steady and on-going, but part-time.

My consulting work includes:
  • design and implementation of FileMaker databases
  • design of custom ACT databases
  • hands-on training of end-users
  • written documentation for end-users
  • set-up of OS X server software
  • QuickBooks
I am attending Vista college to complete some lower division requirements (English and foreign language), and will be re-admitted to UC Berkeley next year. I was a biochemistry major at Berkeley, (a long time ago), but neglected to take all the breadth requirements outside of math and science. I've also been taking other classes at Vista just because they interest me - History of Western Civilization, Physical Geography, Bioethics, Physical Anthropology, Sex & Gender, Scientific Literature, Statistics, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics...

With my previous education, and current classes, it seems that I will be getting a certificate from Vista in their biotechnology program by the time I have enough foreign language completed to transfer back to Berkeley.

My educational goal is to attend a school of public health for a master's in genetics counseling.
Technical Support Manager - Tenon Intersystems
Tenon is a small company, therefore, the job encompassed a great deal more than simple technical support for products. I advised on user-interface design (according to the Apple Aqua guidelines), wrote user manuals and online help files, and did quality assurance testing, in addition to duties supervising tech support team members, being the list-mom for product mailing lists and being the top-tier support person. For personal reasons, I returned to the Bay Area after a little more than a year in Santa Barbara. September 2000 - November 2001
Webmaster - DeAnza College
I was responsible for the college's main web server (1/4 million hits per day), and also for a backup web server and mailing list servers. August 1999 - August 2000 (1-year contract)
Technical Support - WebSTAR Server Software
I wrote the trouble-shooting chapter of the user manual for the server products, was the mailing "list-mom", and was top-level support for web, mail, and ftp server products. March 1997 - May 1999. Later, as a consultant for 4D, I conducted two-day training seminars around the country, in server administration.
Technical Support - Idiom Communications
All aspects of technical support and system administration for a small internet service provider, running free BSD UNIX. Set up email accounts and virtual domains, solve problems, on-site consultation for users, phone support. I loved working for these guys, and they are my DSL provider. September 1996 - January 1997 (contract)
Computer Resource Specialist - UC Berkeley
Manage an Ethernet networked Macintosh computer lab for student athletes and the staff of the department (academic advisors and coordinators of tutorial services, etc.). Provide training and support to students and staff - in Eudora, Pine (and other text -based mail readers), Vi, Netscape, Word, Word Perfect, Claris Works, PageMaker, MeetingMaker, Excel, FileMaker, HTML and more. Create and update department web pages. Create and maintain FileMaker database for student attendance at mandated tutoring. 75% time. (this position was non-permanent due to division reorganization) October 1995 - October 1996
There are a few more techie jobs in my background.
But more importantly to me, I was a cook and later a chef, for a number of years, in wonderful restaurants, and for 5 years, I owned and operated a wholesale French pastry business in San Francisco. Chronic pain forced a career change into something less physically demanding.
One the most important things in my life has been volunteer work in the community. I have done health education at Planetree Health Resource Center, The National VD Hotline (now called STD hotline), the National Herpes Hotline, the SF AIDS Hotline, Planned Parenthood, and a community health clinic. But the biggest contribution I have made is to the San Francisco Sex Information Hotline - I was on the training staff from 1981-1997. That organization conducts a 60-hour training course, twice a year, for its new phone volunteers and I was fortunate to participate in 30 training sessions. My areas of expertise included STDs, contraception, anatomy and physiology and women's sexual and reproductive health issues.

I have also trained as a childbirth educator and doula, and at one time planned to become a midwife; my own infertility made that career path too emotionally painful to pursue.
